...when it gets crisp in the Fall. So wrote F. Scott Fitzgerald the brilliant American novelist, author of 'The Great Gatsby', 'Tender is the Night' and' The Beautiful and Damned'.
Walking the dogs this morning the change of seasons was very apparent and it felt both an ending and a beginning, as Mr Fitzgerald rightly said - Life starts all over again...
...an end to the summer shows, barbecues, shorts and t-shirts, spray bottles to keep hawks cool and endless lawn mowing and a start to the hunting season.
Hawks are reclaimed from chambers after their moult. The Harris Hawks have the beautiful bloom of a fresh Damson, the Goshawks their sharp silver and black and they are all, hopefully, pristine and full of promise for the coming season.
Hounds are fit and ready to hunt after a summer of puppy shows, kennels open days, walking out and hound exercise on bikes and horses.
I wish you all a happy hawking and hunting season - may the quarry be plentiful and fleet of foot.
Don't forget to order your Falconry Record Book if you haven't already got one. It's a great way to save all those brilliant days for future reference and to enjoy next summer when we're all back to counting down the days again.
We will also be producing a Fox Hunting Record Book shortly so we will keep you posted on that one.
